UV-BLOCKING CONTACT LENSES

Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays

Most people are aware of the damage the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UV) can do to the skin. However, few people know that UV radiation can also affect your eyes.

When you spend time outdoors you could be at risk of eye problems caused by UV radiation.

There are three types of harmful rays: long-wave ultraviolet A (UVA), medium-wave ultraviolet B (UVB), and short-wave ultraviolet C (UVC).

UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin’s thickest layer and is responsible for skin tanning and ageing. UVB damages DNA and causes tissue damage, sunburn, and poses more risk than UVA. The intensity of UVB rays vary by season, location and time of day. UVC is the most toxic waveband, however most of it is absorbed by the ozone layer and the atmosphere.

We are exposed to UV rays all year round. Damage caused by UV rays can be cumulative and irreversible, and are a greater risk for children.

Exposure to UV radiation increases the chance of developing acute yet short-term eye conditions such as corneal sunburn (or photokeratitis). UV exposure over time also increases the chance of developing long-term eye conditions such as cataracts.

Did you know that most sun damage occurs in childhood? Read all our tips here on how you can help keep your eyes healthy and protected from the transmission of the sun’s UV-rays.

* All ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses have UV Blocking to help provide protection against the transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye. UV absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV absorbing eyewear such as UV absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV absorbing eyewear as directed by your optician.
