Modern contact lenses are generally very comfortable but there may be some occasions when your contact lenses may not feel as comfortable as usual.

To help manage discomfort in contact lenses, the potential reason needs to be identified. The cause may be due to external environments factors, or your eye physiology, or may be due to the contact lens itself (lens damage, design or material).

If your lenses are uncomfortable during wear, visit your optician who can help understand the potential reasons. Talk to your optician about your vision correction needs as well as your lifestyle, working environment and contact lens care routine. They will then help you assess your symptoms and choose the best contact lenses for you.

Symptoms of discomfort

You may experience contact lens discomfort for a variety of reasons. Symptoms may include:

  • Red eyes
  • Dry eye symptoms
  • Itchy eyes
  • Feeling like you have a foreign body in your eye

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should remove your lenses immediately and seek the advice of your optician. He or she will then be able to identify the problem and, most importantly, investigate the possibility of any underlying long-term eye condition that may be causing you discomfort.

Cleaning and caring

Keeping your contact lenses clean is a key step towards healthy and comfortable eyes when using contact lenses. It is essential that you learn and practise lens care and disinfecting routines whilst following your optician’s instructions.

  • Any time you put in or take out your contact lenses, always remember to wash and dry your hands with mild soap, rinse completely and dry your hands with a lint free towel.
  • Daily disposable contact lenses are the healthiest and the most convenient option of contact correction: there is no need to use cleaning and disinfecting solutions but it is essential to practise good hygiene when handling your contact lenses.
  • Reusable contact lenses require daily cleaning, disinfection and maintenance. Following our simple wear-and-care rules can help keep your eyes looking bright, healthy and comfortable in contact lenses. Making sure you follow your prescribed replacement schedule is also crucial for optimal comfort and vision.
