Wearing and replacing contact lenses

If you are a contact lens wearer, you may be wondering how often you should replace your contact lenses. It’s extremely important that you replace your lenses on schedule in order to keep your eyes comfortable and healthy.

Wear and replacement schedule

When you first receive your contact lenses, your optician will tell you how long you can wear them, and how often they have to be replaced.

Generally, ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses are recommended to be worn and replaced on one of three replacement schedules:

Daily disposable lenses

Wear these lenses for one day, then simply discard and replace with a fresh, new pair the next day. No need for cleaning, disinfecting or storing.

Try ACUVUE® daily disposable lenses

Reusable lenses

Wear these lenses for one day, but rather than discard them at the end of the day you clean and disinfect them, then store them in a contact lens case until you reapply (you’ll find many multi-purpose contact lens solutions that clean and disinfect in one step, making lens care even easier). ACUVUE® OASYS® with HYDRACLEAR™ Plus and ACUVUE® ADVANCE™ with HYDRACLEAR™ worn as a daily reusable lens should be replaced every two weeks with a new pair. Remember to change your lens case as recommended by your optician.

Try ACUVUE® reusable lenses

Extended wear lenses

You can also wear some contact lenses continuously, even while sleeping. ACUVUE® OASYS® can be worn for up to six nights before you discard them and replace with a fresh pair. If you remove them before the end of the wear schedule, you’ll need to clean and disinfect them before you reapply.

Tips to keep you on schedule

The easiest way to maintain your optician's recommended schedule is to sign up for ACUMINDER™. You can receive convenient text or email reminders to change your contact lenses, purchase new ones or when to schedule your next eye exam.

If you're not signed up for ACUMINDER™, here are some extra tips that can help you keep on schedule:

• Always replace your lenses on the same day of the week – many people discard their old lenses on Sunday night and start with a fresh pair on Monday morning

• Mark your calendar – paper or electronic – to remind yourself when to replace your lenses

• When you open up a new box of lenses, write your ‘fresh lens’ day or date on the individual lens packages

• Write ‘reorder’ on your last box of lenses, along with the telephone number of your optician
