What are toric lenses?
Toric lenses are contact lenses that are designed to correct astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when the front part of the eye, the cornea, or the lens within the eye is not a regular symmetrical, spherical shape and is described sometimes as shapes like a rugby ball. As a result, light passing through the eye can't be properly focussed onto the retina at the back of the eye, creating a blurred image.
Toric lenses are made from the same materials as regular contact lenses but they have a few extra characteristics to enable them to correct astigmatism. As it is important that they maintain their position and do not rotate on the eye, they are designed differently to other lenses that simply correct short or long sightedness.
How do ACUVUE® toric lenses help to correct astigmatism?
To maintain clear vision throughout the day they need to stay in place. However, gravity and the effects of the lids against the lens surface can easily rotate or shift the lens out of position as you blink or move your eyes or head. ACUVUE® uses a unique Accelerated Stabilization Design (ASD) in those lenses designed for Astigmatism. ASD harnesses the natural pressure of your eyelids to help keep lenses where they need to be, no matter how active your lifestyle.
What toric lenses do ACUVUE® offer?
ACUVUE® has a range of products to correct astigmatism. You can choose from the daily disposable, 1•DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® for ASTIGMATISM or ACUVUE® OASYS® for ASTIGMATISM and ACUVUE® ADVANCE® for ASTIGMATISM which are 2 weekly reusable contact lenses. They all offer UV protection as well*
How do I know if I need toric contact lenses for astigmatism?
When you book an appointment your eye care professional will examine your eyes to determine whether you require vision correction and to check that your eyes are healthy too. Should you require a prescription to help you to see and if you are found to have an astigmatism, this does not in any way preclude you from choosing to wear contact lenses. The exact variety of contact lens that is right for you will be discussed.
Free trial
ACUVUE® is currently offering a free trial pair of contact lenses, which provides a great opportunity to try our contacts before purchasing.
* UV-absorbing contact lenses are not substitutes for UV-blocking sunglasses as they do not completely cover the eye and the surrounding area
