What is saline solution?

Saline solution is a sterile solution of sodium chloride, made from salt and purified water. Contact lenses are packaged in saline solution when manufactured and sterilised so that they are safe to wear when removed from the blister pack.

Unlike other contact lenses, daily disposable contact lenses do not require any cleaning or soaking solutions as they are discarded once they are removed from the eyes. Reusable contact lenses however, require cleaning and then soaking in fresh disinfecting solution every night to make them safe to wear the following day. Most people choose ‘all in one’ solutions that are used to both clean and disinfect the contact lenses. Saline is not a cleaning or disinfecting solution as it does not contain the chemicals required to do this. Water must not be allowed to come in to contact with the lenses or the case at any time as this, as well as poor hygiene or incorrect use of the care solutions can result in a rare but serious eye infection.
