Opticians and Optometrists

In the UK the term optician is often used to cover both optometrists and dispensing opticians, however, they are not technically the same. A dispensing optician is qualified to fit and supply glasses and may have a further qualification entitling them to prescribe contact lenses too. All contact lens fittings will be preceded by a visit to the optometrist who is also qualified to prescribe contact lenses. An optometrist, sometimes known as an ophthalmic optician examines eyes for both vision and overall health. Some optometrists prescribe a limited range of drugs if they have the relevant qualifications. Optometrists will refer patients to an ophthalmologist where a medical opinion, treatment or eye surgery might possibly be required this may include prescribing glasses and contact lenses, medication or performing surgery.
