What are contact lenses made from?

Most contact lenses fitted today are soft lenses. Soft contact lenses are made of flexible ‘water-attracting’ plastic specially designed for this use. Some have special moisturising additives to help them retain their moisture for longer and some also use new silicone materials to pass even higher amounts of oxygen to the eye than normal soft lens materials which help to keep the eye looking healthy and white.

Why is it important that ACUVUE® Contact Lenses let through oxygen?

Oxygen is essential to keep your eyes looking healthy and white. To ensure high levels of oxygen can reach your eyes, the latest ACUVUE® Contact Lenses are made of an advanced silicone material. The daily disposable 1•DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® and the 2 weekly reusables ACUVUE® OASYS® and ACUVUE® ADVANCE® are made from these extremely oxygen permeable materials. UV can damage your eyes and may play a role in the development of problems such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Why is it important that my eyes are kept moist?

By keeping your eyes moist you will benefit from improved comfort whilst wearing your contact lenses as they will be less likely to feel dry or irritated.

What different types of contact lenses are there?

The most common type fitted today is soft contact lenses. Soft contact lenses are comfortable so most people get used to them very easily indeed. Soft contact lenses are available as either daily disposable or reusable. ACUVUE® daily disposable contact lenses are intended for single use only, meaning that when you remove them, you throw them away. It is the most convenient and hygienic way of wearing contact lenses. ACUVUE® reusable lenses can be used every day for up to two weeks. They should be removed and cleaned/disinfected every night and can then be reinserted the next day.

*UV-absorbing contact lenses are not substitutes for UV-blocking sunglasses as they do not completely cover the eye and the surrounding area.
