Artificial tears
What are artificial tears?
Artificial tears or rewetting drops are used to help reduce symptoms of discomfort and irritation when eyes feel dry.
When should I use them?
If your eyes feel dry, rewetting drops may provide some relief. You could try them in the first instance, but it is worthwhile consulting your eye care professional to decide what the best approach would be.
How do I know if I can use rewetting drops with contact lenses?
If your eyes feel dry whilst wearing contact lenses, rewetting drops might be worth trying, but they will need to be specifically for use with contact lenses if you plan to use drops while wearing them. It is advisable that you visit your eye care professional for the most appropriate advice.
What should I do if my eyes feel dry?
Your GP or eye care professional will be able to advise you on the most appropriate action. They will ask about your symptoms and may examine your eyes. If you wear contact lenses, your eye care professional may decide to try an alternative contact lens, soaking solution (if one is used) or recommend a rewetting drop.
There are multiple possibilities for eyes feeling dry. Once your GP or eye care professional has discussed the problem and decided on the best course of action, they will recommend the most appropriate next steps for you.
