Teen FAQs

Answers for teens thinking about contact lenses

Are contact lenses difficult to care for?

Contact lenses are easy to care for, the most convenient option is using daily disposables. With 1•DAY ACUVUE® TruEye™ or 1•DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® lenses you wear them for one day and then throw them away in the evening!

Am I too young to wear lenses?

No, there’s no minimum age for contact lenses. Many teens, and even some pre-teens, wear them. A typical age to start wearing lenses currently is 16. However, children as young as eight can be mature enough to wear and care for them – successful lens wear depends more on responsibility and attitude than age. Your optician will help you and your parents decide if lenses are right for you and will help you choose the right ACUVUE® lenses for your vision correction needs.

Are contact lenses comfortable?

ACUVUE® contact lenses are extremely thin and are manufactured from materials that allow oxygen to pass through them and reach the eye surface. Most people find them very comfortable and easy to wear - it doesn’t take long before it can feel like you’re wearing nothing at all in your eye.
To help ensure you enjoy maximum comfort, most ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses use revolutionary patented wetting technologies such as HYDRACLEAR®, HYDRACLEAR® Plus, HYDRACLEAR®1 and LACREON™. Unlike some other brands that surface-coat their lenses, ACUVUE® brand wetting technologies are part of the lens material itself and permanently embedded, giving you a smooth, silky feel that will help keep your eyes moist and comfortable all day long.

Will I have trouble following the proper lens care and wear schedules designated by the optician?

With daily disposable lenses like 1•DAY ACUVUE® TruEye™ or 1•DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® there is no care required for them since they are discarded at the end of the day. Many people find this the easiest solution. Reusable lenses like ACUVUE® ADVANCE® with HYDRACLEAR® require minor care. Rather than discarding them at the end of the day, you clean and disinfect them, then store them in a contact lens case until you reapply them the next day. Your eye care professional will advise you about how to use and care for contact lenses.

Can I wear contact lenses when I do sport or other activities?

Lenses are great for sports. They give you perfectly clear eyesight with no risk of your glasses fogging up, falling off or breaking. What’s more, unlike glasses, lenses give your eyesight optimum peripheral vision. Wearing glasses can be a big inconvenience when you need to use goggles or a protective mask, contact lenses don’t get in the way and let you get on with whatever you are doing.

Can I wear my contact lenses overnight?

Some ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses can be worn while you sleep. For example, ACUVUE® OASYS® lenses can be worn for six nights seven days consecutively. Only your optician can determine if sleeping in your contact lenses is right for you and provide you with information on proper use.
